Newton Beach Defences Replacement Scheme IMWA001607

The Purpose

The purpose of the works was to replace the current rip rap protection with a more robust solution that was be able to withstand severe storm surges and tidal events.

Design

  • The design incorporated materials that will extend the life of the embankment.
  • It was designed to withstand the severe tidal surges that it will be subjected to.
  • The existing rip rap stone was used with the design taking this into consideration.
  • Large service pipe that's runs under the embankment taken into account, this required bridging over and liaising with Welsh Water.
  • The design incorporated the provision of large blockstone or the placement of stone revetment that is sized and designed to dissipate wave energy.

The contract was completed ahead of time and within budget despite minimising disruption to local businesses and residents by suspending works for 2 weeks over the busy Easter period.

All material was sourced prior to commencement from nearby quarries within 5 miles to increase the sustainability of the project.

The Works

The works included the design and construction of replacement revetment defences at Newton Beach, Porthcawl.
